Getting started

Install Roomy

Download, install and open Roomy for the first time.

Installing Roomy takes about a minute. You don't need an account or a license to start: the free version scans your whole Mac and cleans up to 500 MB.

Before you start

  • System requirements: macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on a Mac with Apple silicon and Intel.
  • Download only from our website. Roomy is sold directly by us, not through the Mac App Store or other download sites.

Install Roomy

  1. Go to the download page and click Download. You get a disk image, a file ending in .dmg, of about 5 MB.
  2. Open your Downloads folder and double-click the .dmg file. A window opens with the Roomy icon and a shortcut to your Applications folder.
  3. Drag the Roomy icon onto the Applications folder.
  4. Eject the disk image: in the Finder sidebar, click the eject button next to Roomy. You can then move the .dmg file to the Trash.
  5. Open Applications and double-click Roomy.
  6. Because the app came from the internet, macOS asks if you're sure you want to open it. Click Open. You only see this the first time.

What happens on first launch

  • Roomy scans automatically. In a minute or two the Overview shows how much space you can free and what's safe to clean. Nothing is removed until you click a clean button and confirm.
  • macOS may ask for access to your Downloads folder. Click Allow so Roomy can list old downloads and installer files. It never removes them unless you choose them, and they go to the Trash.
  • Full Disk Access is optional. If the Overview says some locations couldn't be read, you can give Roomy Full Disk Access for a more complete scan. See Full Disk Access.

When you're ready, click Clean Safe Items on the Overview. This only removes items rated Safe that apps rebuild by themselves, such as caches and logs. Read Safe, Review and Caution to see how items are chosen.

Tips

  • Press ⌘ R (or choose File → Scan Again) to scan again at any time.
  • Already bought Pro? Activate your license to remove the cleaning limit.
  • Roomy doesn't install background helpers, login items or kernel extensions. It only runs when you open it.

Updating Roomy

To update, quit Roomy, download the latest version from the download page, and drag it to Applications again. When asked, choose Replace. Your license, settings and Activity Log are kept.

If that didn't work

  • "Roomy can't be opened" or macOS can't verify it: delete the copy you have, download it again from our download page (not another site), and make sure you open it from Applications, not from inside the disk image.
  • "You can't open the application because it isn't supported on this Mac": check that your Mac runs macOS 14 Sonoma or later in Apple menu → About This Mac.
  • The download won't start or the disk image is damaged: try another browser, check your free space, and download again.
