Optimize & Maintenance

Mac maintenance, without the Terminal.

The maintenance commands Mac experts type into Terminal, as one-click tasks with a plain-English description of each. Plus a list of background helpers, with broken ones flagged.

Roomy is a paid app. The free version scans everything and cleans up to 500 MB.

Six tasks, fully explained

No mystery buttons. Each task says what it does and when it helps, and here is the exact command it runs, so you know nothing else happens behind the scenes.

  • Asks for password

    Free up memory

Clears inactive memory and disk caches held in RAM. Useful right before a heavy task such as a big export or a game.

    /usr/sbin/purge

  • Asks for password

    Flush DNS cache

Fixes websites that won’t load or still point to an old server after a network or DNS change.

    dscacheutil -flushcache; killall -HUP mDNSResponder

  • Rebuild Launch Services

Removes duplicate apps from the “Open With” menu and fixes files opening in the wrong app.

lsregister -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

  • Asks for password

    Thin Time Machine snapshots

Asks macOS to release space held by local Time Machine snapshots on your startup disk.

    tmutil thinlocalsnapshots / 999999999999 4

  • Delete unavailable simulators

Removes iOS simulators for versions your Xcode no longer supports. Shown only when Xcode is installed.

    xcrun simctl delete unavailable

  • Asks for password

    Reindex Spotlight

Rebuilds the search index when Spotlight misses files or shows stale results.

Runs in the background and can take a few hours. Your Mac may feel slower meanwhile.

    mdutil -E /

Find broken login helpers

Apps install launch agents and daemons to run things in the background. When you delete the app, the helper often stays behind and fails at every login.

  • Lists helpers from ~/Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchAgents and /Library/LaunchDaemons, with the program each one runs.
  • Flags a helper as Broken when the program it launches no longer exists.
  • Helpers in your account can be removed: stopped first, then moved to the Trash.
  • Helpers for all users are shown with Reveal in Finder, and Open Login Items Settings is one click away.

Honest about speed

We don’t claim these tasks make your Mac faster by a certain percentage. They fix specific problems: a stale DNS cache, a confused “Open With” menu, a broken search index, space held by local snapshots.

macOS manages memory well by itself, so freeing RAM is rarely necessary. When your Mac feels slow, a nearly full disk is a more common cause, and freeing up space usually helps more.

Your password stays with macOS.

Tasks that need an administrator use the standard macOS password dialog. Roomy never sees, stores or sends your password, and it doesn’t install a privileged helper to work around it.

Optimize questions

How do I free up RAM on a Mac?

Quitting apps you aren’t using frees the most memory. For the rest, Free up memory in Roomy runs macOS’s purge command, which clears inactive memory and disk caches. macOS manages memory well on its own, so this is rarely needed; it can help right before a heavy task.

How do I flush DNS on a Mac?

Click Run next to Flush DNS cache and enter your password in the macOS dialog. It clears the DNS cache and restarts the mDNSResponder service, which fixes most “site can’t be reached” problems after a network change.

How do I delete Time Machine local snapshots?

Run Thin Time Machine snapshots. It asks macOS to release as much space held by local snapshots as it can. macOS decides which snapshots to remove, and your backups on the Time Machine drive aren’t affected.

Is it safe to reindex Spotlight?

Yes. It deletes and rebuilds the search index, not your files. Search results are incomplete until indexing finishes, which can take a few hours, and your Mac may feel busier meanwhile.

What are launch agents, and should I remove them?

Launch agents and daemons are small background helpers that start when you log in. Many are useful. A broken one points to an app you already deleted and fails at every login; those are worth removing. Roomy can remove helpers in your own account, which it stops first and moves to the Trash.

Why do some tasks ask for my password?

Tasks that change system-wide settings need an administrator. macOS shows its own password dialog. Roomy never sees or stores your password.
